Of all the Montessori sensorial materials, the Baric Tablets are perhaps the least celebrated — and the most quietly profound. There is nothing visually dramatic about them. Three plain wooden boxes, a handful of tablets that look identical. And yet, what they ask of a child is something genuinely difficult: to sit still, to suspend sight, to direct full attention inward to the palms of the hands, and to make a judgement based entirely on what is felt. In a world of screens and instant visual stimulation, that quality of quiet, inward attention is rarer and more valuable than ever.
Every Indian child has, without knowing it, already used their baric sense. Picking up a full steel dabba vs an empty one. Lifting a wet school bag vs a dry one. Feeling whether a clay diya is thick or thin before it’s painted. The Baric Tablets lesson does not introduce a new sense — it makes a child conscious of a sense they have always had, and gives them the language and precision to use it deliberately.
What Are Montessori Baric Tablets?
Baric Tablets sit in the sensorial area of the Montessori classroom, alongside the Smelling Bottles, Sound Cylinders, and Thermic Tablets. They are typically made from three different species of wood — traditionally mahogany (heavy), beech or oak (medium), and balsa or lime (light) — cut to identical dimensions so that the only variable is weight. The word “baric” comes from the Greek baros, meaning weight or pressure — the same root as “barometer.” In Montessori, it refers to the haptic sense of weight: the ability to perceive heaviness and lightness through the hands and arms, rather than through sight.
Each box holds 6–7 tablets. The tablets within each box are identical in weight. The tablets across boxes differ only in weight, not in size or shape. This is the Montessori principle of isolation of the quality — the same principle behind the Pink Tower (all cubes pink, only size varies) and the Brown Stairs (all prisms brown, only thickness varies). Remove every variable except the one you are teaching. Let the sense do its work.
What Is the Baric Sense — and Why Does It Matter?
The baric sense is processed through two interacting mechanisms: pressure receptors in the skin (which respond to the weight pressing down on the palm) and proprioceptive receptors in the muscles and joints (which respond to the muscular effort required to hold or lift an object). Together, these give us the subjective experience of something feeling “heavy” or “light.”
This sense is surprisingly trainable. A jeweller develops extraordinary sensitivity to tiny weight differences between gemstones. A chai vendor in Varanasi can pour a perfect 100ml measure by feel alone. These are not innate gifts — they are the result of refined attention to a sense that most people leave undeveloped. The Three Sets of Tablets — What They Are Made From
The different wood colours serve as the control of error — once the child has sorted all tablets by weight, they can look at the colour groupings to confirm whether heavy tablets are with heavy, medium with medium, and light with light. This is why the tablets must never be painted over or stained to the same colour — the natural wood colour variation is a deliberate pedagogical feature, not a cosmetic one.

DIY Baric Tablets — Indian Home Alternatives
The authentic Montessori Baric Tablets are beautifully made but expensive to import. For Montessori at home in India, there are excellent alternatives that cost almost nothing and work on exactly the same principle.
Montessori Baric Tablets Presentation I — Introducing Heavy and Light
The first presentation uses only two boxes: the heaviest and the lightest. Greatest contrasts first — this is the Montessori principle that runs through every sensorial sequence. The medium box is introduced only once the child can reliably distinguish heavy from light.
Invite the Child
“Would you like to come and work with the Baric Tablets?” Carry the heavy box and the light box to the table together — the child carries one, you carry the other. Show the two-handed carry from the shelf. Place both boxes side by side in the centre of the work mat.
Introduce “Baric”
Open both boxes. Say: “These are the Baric Tablets. Baric means weight.” Say it simply, once. Do not over-explain. Pick up one dark (heavy) tablet using a three-finger grip and place it on your palm. Show the weighing movement: both palms face upward, forearms parallel to the table, and gently move them up and down — not dramatically, but with genuine attention, as if you are actually feeling something. This is the baric weighing gesture. It is specific to this material and should always be demonstrated clearly.
Name: “This Is Heavy”
After demonstrating the weighing gesture with the dark tablet, say: “This is heavy.” Then place it on the child’s palm and invite them to use the same gesture. Give them the experience of “heavy” before you contrast it with “light.” Wait. Let the weight register.
Contrast: “This Is Light”
Pick up a pale (light) tablet. Use the weighing gesture on your own palm. Your expression can show the contrast — a slight lift of the eyebrow, a moment of surprise, a different quality of attention. Say: “This is light.” Place it on the child’s other hand. Both hands are now holding one tablet each — heavy in one, light in the other. Ask gently: “Can you feel the difference?”
Invite the Child to Explore
Take one tablet from each box — randomly — and give them to the child to feel. Do not tell them which is which. Say: “Which feels heavier? Which feels lighter?” Allow the child to use the weighing gesture on their own. Observe without rushing. The feeling of weight is not instant — it requires a few seconds of quiet comparison. Protect that time.
Sort Into Two Groups
Once the child has the feel of heavy and light, place all tablets from both boxes randomly in a mixed pile. Demonstrate sorting: take two tablets, one in each hand, use the weighing gesture, and decide — heavy goes left, light goes right. Sort a few yourself, then invite the child to continue. Work unhurriedly and silently.
Complete the Work Cycle
When sorting is complete, check using the control of error — the wood colours. Return tablets to their correct boxes, and return boxes to the shelf with both hands. The complete work cycle — invitation, work, return — is always honoured.
Montessori Baric Tablets Presentation II — Introducing the Medium Grade
Once the child can sort heavy and light reliably and confidently — usually after several independent sessions — introduce the medium box. This is where the real discrimination begins. Heavy vs light is a broad distinction; distinguishing medium from each of the others requires genuinely refined haptic sensitivity.
Bring All Three Boxes
Bring all three boxes to the table. “We have a new box today.” Open the medium box. Use the weighing gesture with one medium tablet on your palm. Let your expression show something in between — not quite the sinking feeling of heavy, not quite the surprising lightness of light. Say: “This is medium weight.” Place it on the child’s palm.
Compare All Three
Give the child one tablet from each box — heavy in the left hand, light in the right, medium set aside. Let them feel the contrast again to reestablish their reference points. Then place the medium tablet in one hand and ask: “Is this heavier than the light one? Is it lighter than the heavy one?” Give time. The answer may come slowly. That is the work.
Sort All Three Groups
Mix all tablets from all three boxes randomly in one pile. Now sort into three groups: heavy, medium, and light. This is significantly harder than the two-group sort — the child must hold a mental reference for all three grades simultaneously. Demonstrate a few, then invite the child. Check with the wood colours at the end. Return to shelf.
Montessori Baric Tablet Presentation III — Blindfolded Sorting
This is the most advanced presentation and the one most closely associated with the Baric Tablets in the Montessori imagination. Once the child can reliably sort all three grades by sight — meaning they know what they are doing well enough to do it without looking — introduce the blindfold.
Prepare the Workspace
Mix tablets from all three boxes into two equal random piles on the table. Set up three clear areas on the table — left for heavy, centre for medium, right for light. Have the blindfold ready (a light cotton dupatta or bandana works perfectly).
Demonstrate Blindfolded Weighing
Put on the blindfold yourself first — this removes any anxiety the child might have about the process. Pick up one tablet from each pile. Use the weighing gesture — both palms moving gently up and down. Cross your arms (right over left), then uncross and feel again. This cross-arm technique is a classic Montessori refinement: crossing arms brings each tablet to the opposite hand, which refreshes the comparison. Place the tablet in its category (heavy, medium, or light). Remove blindfold and show the colour check.
Invite the Child
Mix the tablets again. Invite the child to put on the blindfold. Step back. Observe without directing. If the child hesitates, say nothing — let them sit with the uncertainty and feel their way through it. Trust the child to find their own quality of attention. Trust the material to do its work.
The Three-Period Lesson — Building Weight Vocabulary
After many sessions of weighing and sorting, introduce the three-period lesson to formalise language around weight. Use the same structure as with all sensorial materials.
Period 1 — Naming
“This is heavy. This is light.”
Present the heaviest and lightest tablets side by side. Use the weighing gesture on each as you name it. “This is heavy.” “This is light.” Once these are established, introduce the medium: “This is medium weight — between heavy and light.”
Period 2 — Recognition
“Can you give me the heavy one?”
Mix two tablets from different sets and ask the child to identify a specific weight by name. Keep it to two grades at first (heavy vs light), then extend to all three. If the child hesitates, return to Period 1 without comment. In Montessori, returning to an earlier period is not failure — it is good teaching.
Period 3 — Recall
“What does this one feel like?”
Hand the child a tablet and ask: “What is this one?” Extend into comparative language when the child is confident: “Is this heavier or lighter than this one?” Then introduce superlatives: “Can you find the heaviest of the three?” The vocabulary progression — heavy/light → heavier/lighter → heaviest/lightest — mirrors the mathematical mind’s natural movement from absolute to comparative to superlative.
Baric Tablets Extensions — After the Child Has Mastered All Three Presentations
⚖️ The Balance Scale Extension
Once the child has refined their baric sense through the tablets, introduce a simple balance scale. Ask the child to first predict which of two objects is heavier using only their hands — then test the prediction on the scale. This bridges the sensorial work to the mathematical curriculum and introduces the concept of measurement. It is one of the most satisfying Montessori extensions: the child’s body knowledge is confirmed or challenged by a physical tool, and they learn that weight is something that can be precisely measured, not just felt.
🏠 Household Weight Walk
Take a walk through the home and collect 5–6 small objects of clearly different weights (an empty steel katori, a full one, a wooden spoon, a stone, a cotton ball, a key). Ask the child to rank them from lightest to heaviest using the weighing gesture — without looking at the objects, just feeling. This extension is the Baric Tablets lesson applied to the real world — exactly where Montessori intends all sensorial work to land eventually.
🎭 Eyes-Closed Grading
Rather than sorting into just three categories, set up a full grading activity: mix tablets from all three boxes and ask the child to arrange them in a line from lightest to heaviest. This requires holding a continuous mental scale of weight across many tablets simultaneously — a genuine cognitive challenge, and excellent preparation for the concept of a number line.
🔬 Same Size, Different Weight — The Density Conversation
Once the child has worked with the tablets extensively, hold up a heavy tablet and a light tablet side by side: “Look — they are the same size. Why does one feel heavier?” This is the child’s first encounter with the concept of density — that different materials pack different amounts of mass into the same space. After the child has worked with all three, invite a conversation: “We sorted these by smell, we sorted these by sound — now we are sorting by weight. Control of Error
The Baric Tablets have a visual control of error built in: the natural colour of the wood. Heavy tablets are made from dark dense wood; light tablets from pale, porous wood. After sorting by feel, the child looks at the colour groupings — if heavy tablets have been placed with light ones, the visual inconsistency is immediately apparent. This is a more sophisticated control of error than it appears: the child must first complete the entire task by feel, then step back and evaluate using a different sense (sight). 5 Activities Related to the Baric Tablets
- Predict and Test: Before weighing any object on the balance scale, ask the child to predict the outcome using their hands. Then test. Record the results on a simple chart: “I thought X was heavier — I was right / I was surprised.” This develops scientific thinking: form a hypothesis, test it, observe the result. Prediction without testing is guessing; prediction followed by testing is science.
- Weight Vocabulary Book: Create a small hand-drawn book with the child: “Things that are heavy in our home,” “Things that are light in our home.” The child draws, you write the labels (or they do, in the Montessori language area stage). - Cooking Connection — Measure by Feel: In the kitchen, ask the child to feel two handfuls of the same dry ingredient — one full handful, one half — and decide which is heavier. - Guess the Material: Prepare small bags containing pieces of different materials — a stone, a piece of wood, a wad of cotton, a coin — all the same volume. - Partner Baric Work: Two children, back to back. One holds a tablet and says “heavy,” “medium,” or “light.” The other holds a different tablet and makes the same assessment.
